Thank you for visiting www.Coloradohorsehay.com and the Little Salt Wash Hay Co. We are located on the western slope of Colorado just north of Grand Junction. We are a small family run operation specializing in growing and providing quality hay. We grow a premium grass/alfalfa mix here on our own farm and do some limited custom haying to have access to straight alfalfa and straight grass hay. Our mix is primarily orchard grass and perennial rye with alfalfa and averages about 70-80 percent grass, depending on the cutting. We also have mountain grass available from the Westcliffe area of Colorado thru a partner who also delivers our hay.
Hay grown here on the western slope of Colorado is in demand all over the country due to its quality. We time our cuttings to get the most out of the hay's nutritional value, not the most tonnage per acre. Earlier baling means the plant has a thinner stem wall which results in hay with a higher RFV (Relative Feed Value) than more mature plants. Alfalfa just starting into the bloom has a higher protein level than alfalfa late in the blooming stage. We test our hay in order to let the customer know what they are buying. Hay with a higher protein percentage, higher TDN (Total Digestive Nutrients), and RVF is not only better for your animals, but results in a lower cost in the long run than poorer quality hay. A lesser amount of quality hay is needed to maintain the weight and health of the animal. Additional feeds or supplements can be matched with the forage to provide nutrition based on animals' specific needs.
Our hay is starting to be in big demand by folks who raise alpacas. The alpacas really seem to like the Orchard grass mix. Check with us for references. We are sold out of hay for the 2005 season! Please check back next year or visit with us about next year's availabilty.
We would be glad to visit with you about our hay. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
